Canon Versus Sony

My prior camera, the Canon Powershot S2 was great with a 12X zoom. I could take pictures during softball games and freeze the softball in motion going across the plate and of course under my breath mumble, "that wasn't a strike, and I have the picture to prove it." Smiling.... Needless to say one day the screen went completely black except for the display icons. Now what could be causing that, sure enough the shutter was sticking. Found a great website that provided instructions to un-stick that nasty shutter. Unfortunately it didn't stay un-stuck and from what I was reading could be an expensive repair.

I debated for several months on which camera would best suit my needs, reading Consumer Report and online reviews. So I watched the sales ads and a little more than a week before Christmas I purchased a Nikon 6200 knowing I could use it for 45 days before returning it. Yeah I know bad timing. It's now Christmas eve, and of course I didn't have much time to play with it, I made sure it was full charged and ready to go Christmas morning. Now I'm not a complete novice, nor am I an expert when it comes to cameras but I didn't get a real feel about it. I prefer to try out cameras in the summer when there is bright sunlight, make sure you can see on the LCD exactly what you're taking a picture of and not just guessing because the screens too dark. Then again I'm a summer sort of gal and do not like the cold, dreary, dark winter.

Now it's after Christmas with a limited supply of cameras and I'm looking for the Canon 230SX or the Sony DSC HX9 because each received excellent reviews. I'm at a local retail store and just happen to pick up a Sony, I don't recall the model but it didn't have a long zoom and I basically just wanted to test it. Well I feel in love with the "motion detection". It was set on Auto and I waved my hand in front of the lens and no blur, perfect shot. So now what do I do as there are no Sony DSC HX9's available and it doesn't appear that it will be available any time soon. Apparently limited supply of Sony's due to the Earthquake last year. So in the mean time I did find the Canon 230SX for a very good price and am now testing it to see if I want to keep it or not. Took a few pictures but have yet to print them. If you research the 230SX it has a NB-5L lithium-ion battery. I have the GPS turned off and have viewed my pictures, sometimes zooming in while reviewing and I must say it doesn't take long before the battery needs charged again. The powershot took 4 AA's and I sure do miss that in the newer cameras.

Would appreciate any comments on the Canon or Sony.

New Wallet

I finally got around to taking a picture of the new wallet I made. The pattern came from http://www.bluebirdswing.blogspot.com/2010/06/my-very-first-tutorial-lets-make-wallet.html

As you can see I use the top pocket for cash and change in the zippered section, then credit cards in the middle and then another pocket at the bottom for receipts, or I have my drivers license and insurance cards in a plastic holder in that pocket, and whatever else you need tucked in there, more cash if the top pocket can't hold it all. I wish that were the case. LOL The checkbook would fit there too if you carry one.

I should have followed her instructions and used a 7" zipper. I used a larger one and then couldn't top stitch around the outside. I also didn't have fusible fleece so I used wonder under over batting. I was in too much of a hurry to make one and didn't want to wait for the right supplies. LOL I also used velcro in lieu of the magnetic snaps only because I thought I read somewhere not to use magnetic near credit cards. That said, I sure do like it. The finished size is about 8-1/4" by 4". I have been using it for awhile in a purse that has entirely too much junk in it.

Kirsten from AllFreeSewing contacted me as they included my Jewelry Roll pattern on their site. You should really hop on over and take a peek at all the goodies listed there.

Of course there are many that I would love to make, and I think this one is just adorable Gathered-Clutch.
Now wouldn't this make the cutest gift for a girl to hold her money Mini Packback Coin Purse. I'm a sucker for purse or wallet patterns.

In regards to my Jewelry Roll pattern, I had mentioned that in order to keep the jewelry more secure I would add another row of ribbon or binding. Jean left a comment about the changes she would make:

Sew 1 longer piece of ribbon at the left center outside edge of the roll that way you can secure it however tightly you need to. I also noted you thought you might add another row of ribbon or binding to secure heavier longer necklaces better, I think an even better solution is to make the pockets about 3/4 of the way up to the ribbon at the top inside. It holds better. Finally, I layered and bound the roll like a quilt. I thought it was less bulky, easy, and I didn't need to finish the end of the ring and earring pocket, just ran the binding over it to finish it neatly. Worked great and looked nice. If I get around to it I'd like to monogram with my emb. machine on dupioni silk for the outside layer. That would be a classy looking gift!

I finally got my camera to work temporaly. The shutter sticks on this darn camera and only after playing around with it, I can temporarly at times get the shutter unstuck just long enough to take a picture or two before it locks up again. Christmas day I was able to take one picture and then, well you know.....

I wanted to share the two gifts I received in the mail.

This is the beautiful snowflake necklace I won from Marie at Sredeluxe.

I received a package from Jessica of Imsewhappy. I thought now what could this be. I eagerly opened the package and to my delight she sent me the 12 Days of Christmas book by Debbie Mumm. I was so excited. So the only thing one can do with a new book in hand, is make a cup of hot raspberry tea and get cozy in the recliner and enjoy browsing all the projects and recipes, and that is exactly what I did.

It has the cutest projects, a partridge pincushion, welcome birdhouse wallhanging, a wreath pillow, French hen tea cosy, flying geese placemats, french hen address book, calling bird Christmas cards and lots more.

It has been to long since I posted anything to share with my friends. I had started to write about what has been taking up most of my time over the past months. I then decided there was something more important to share at this time.

As you are aware, elections are taking place around the country. Our country and government is need of so much prayer. Their eyes need to be opened to see the desires of the Lord.

Zometa

I just had my first Zometa treatment Friday at 8:50 am. Nurse first tried IV in hand, then moved to the arm (small veins). Felt fine up to 10:00 pm then rib cage hurt with other minor aches. I had a fever over night with ocassional chills. Didn't take temp until morning which was 100.9 then up to 101.2. Saturday I slept a lot and didn't have an appetite. Today, Sunday, aches are gone but still feel wiped out, no energy at all. I took a 2-1/2 hour nap this afternoon. I was told to take extra strength tylenol, not sure if it helped much. Don't know how bad I would have felt without it. I hope each dose doesn't make me feel this bad. I had breast cancer in 2003, this is to help my bones since I have osteopenia now. Yea the doctors didn't tell me in 2006 that I was .1 away from osteopenia because it was "normal". Now I am at -1.8 for the hip and spine. Could have done something about it back then. Now I know to ask them when they tell me something is normal to ask where in the normal range I fall. I don't want to find out the hard way again. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer my CA 27.29 was a high normal too. Kind of scarey, though I know God is in control.

I had blood work done Thursday in preparation for my check up on Monday. April 23rd will be my 7 year anniversary since I got the dreaded "cancer" phone call from the Doctor. I feel truly blessed through the grace of God. He has walked by me every step of the way. One song I am fond of is "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow" by Ira F. Stanphill.

A Wonderful Surprise

I am a little late posting this. Camera batteries were dead and couldn't find the charger. It's here somewhere, so when at Walmart bought some Energizer AA's to use. Now who likes Duracell versus Energizer?

We took everything off and out of our entertainment center so we could move it to paint. Things are scattered everywhere in boxes and piles, piles and more piles. DH didn't realize how much stuff I could store in this one area. Actually neither did I. It's time to declutter....but I ~~need~~ want it all. Yes we are painting in the winter. Long story.....

Now for the real purpose of this post is my surprise package from Jessica. She sent me this beautiful pad of scrapbook paper (you wouldn't believe how beautiful this paper is), a packet of dimensional stickers, and a pair of butterflies. The oval in the middle of the sticker packet says "Life begins the day you start a garden". Also an adorable card which looks hand stamped. Hope to get some creative juices flowing soon. THANK YOU JESSICA!

The thought of a garden brings back memories as a kid.....YUK! Now I would enjoy a real garden. The ground has too much shale, but I do plant a few things close to the house like tomatoes and red/green/yellow peppers.

As DH removed my rubber stamps from behind the bottom set of closed doors, he asks "did you belong to a stamp of the month club?" I didn't like his tone one bit. I was thinking "I only wish". Actually I don't have that many and they are neatly sorted in some plastic trays and stackable. It's actually been awhile since I used them. Left my mom borrow a few so she could make some cards. I'll have to show you soon what she is working on. I'll save that for the next post.

Jewelry Roll (change recommendation)

Sorry about this ladies and well maybe some gents. It's not often I make up a tutorial.

I just wanted to add that it would probably be best to sew the zippered pocket first. Then you would know better where to draw your pocket lines on the lining.

Original:
The first line is 2-1/2" from left edge, the remaining is as follows:
2", 1-1/2", 3", 2", 2-1/4" and you should be left with 2-1/2" to the right edge. These measurements will vary depending on the size of your pocket.

You can alter the sizes to fit your needs, just be sure that the second pocket from the right edge is approx ~~4-3/4"~~ from edge. You will use the same blue stitching line to sew down zippered pocket.

Change:
You can alter the sizes to fit your needs, just be sure that the second pocket from the right edge will allow at least 1/2" from the right edge of the pocket to the right edge of lining (which would allow for seam allowance and just a bit of extra space).

The first line is 2-1/2" from left edge, the remaining is as follows:
2", 1-1/2", 3", 2", 2-1/4" and you should be left with 2-1/2" to the right edge. All of these measurements will vary depending on the size of your pocket.

I updated the original instructions as to the recommendations.

I am contemplating adding ribbon or a fabric hanger bar (same as the one at the top of the roll but more narrow) slightly above the binding in the lower section to help prevent the necklaces from slipping out of the pockets to far.

Hope you enjoy making this jewelry roll for when you travel and hopefully it keeps everything from becoming a tangled mess. Please let me know if you make one and please do share pictures.

Also if you have any suggestions as to how to make any improvements I am open to suggestions.

Shown rolled or folded in 1/3's

Sample with a few necklaces. Notice the one with out a clasp. Just attach with a knot. (Forget what kind it is called)

SUPPLIES

(1) Fat Quarter Outside Fabric (does not allow for any error in cutting)

(1) Fat Quarter Lining Fabric
** (I used Kona cotton "snow", can't really tell right side from wrong side. If using other fabric with obvious right/wrong side you will need to make a separate pocket rather than fold fabric up. Instructions included below)

(1) piece of batting 9" x 16-1/2"

7" zipper or larger

36" - 40" Ribbon

Marking pen - blue water soluble or if using dark fabric a white pencil which allows marks to be removed.

CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Cut (1) outside fabric 9" x 16-1/2"

From outside fabric or another complimentary fabric cut (1) piece for binding lower pockets section 1-1/4" x 16-1/2".

From outside fabric or complimentary fabric cut (1) piece 2-1/4" x 16-1/2" for the hanger piece at top of roll.

Cut (1) lining fabric 12-1/2" x 16-1/2" if using fabric right/wrong side not noticeable. Otherwise cut (1) inside fabric 9" x 16-1/2" and cut (1) 3-1/4" x 16-1/2".

For lined zippered pocket (no inside seams showing) - finished size approximately 6-3/4" x 4-1/2"

Cut (1) outside fabric and (1) lining fabric 7-1/2" x 5-1/2"
Cut (1) outside fabric and (1) lining fabric 7-1/2" x 4-5/8"
or cut both pieces 5-1/2" and trim any excess at the end
**The pictures illustratated below shows all pieces cut 7-1/2" x 6" which I trimmed down to size after sewing.

I used a 7" zipper (non-metal) but using a 9" zipper would allow sewing without fussing with the metal pull tab. The only exception to using a larger zipper you will have some of the bulk from the teeth in your seam.

***** It would probably be best to start with the pocket first.

Instructions starting with roll:

Lay binding piece (1-1/4" x 16-1/2") across one long edge of lining piece.
If you had to cut a piece 3-1/4" x 16-1/2" for separate pocket section then position binding piece right side down on right side of pocket piece)

Sew binding to lining or extra pocket piece, press, fold to the back turn under edge and top stitch on front.

If using one lining piece 12-1/4" x 16-1/2" fold up the bottom that you just put the binding on 3-1/4" and pin in place.
If using separate pocket piece place right side up on right side of lining fabric. Pin in place.

Place lining piece right side up on top of batting.

For the hanger near the top of the lining, press the 2-1/4" piece in half.

Open

Press each side in towards the middle. Just be sure both sides are pressed in the same width.

Fold to close and top stitch both edges.

Place top edge of hanger 4-1/2" from top edge of binding of pockets. Pin in place. DO NOT SEW ACROSS HANGER.

*** I am contemplating adding ribbon or a fabric hanger bar (same as the one above but more narrow) slightly above the binding in the lower section to help keep the necklaces from slipping out of the pockets to far.

Using a water soluble marker draw lines from top edge of binding down to bottom edge of lining and also from top edge of hanger to bottom edge of hanger.

** Changed:
You can alter the sizes to fit your needs, just be sure that the second pocket from the right edge will allow at least 1/2" from the right edge of the pocket to the right edge of lining (which would allow for seam allowance and just a bit of extra space).

The first line is 2-1/2" from left edge, the remaining is as follows:
2", 1-1/2", 3", 2", 2-1/4" and you should be left with 2-1/2" to the right edge. All of these measurements will vary depending on the size of your pocket.

Sew thorough lining and batting all blue marked lines except the second line from the right edge in both top and bottom section, reinforcing the edges. (Picture doesn't show all the pockets)

Zippered Lined Pocket Instructions:
(Made slightly different from a lined pouch with zipper at the top edge)

You can see in this picture the opening (from flipping right side out) at the bottom of pocket which will be hand stitched closed.

Using the two 5-1/2" pocket pieces lay your lining right side up and position zipper right side up.

Place your outer fabric right side down over zipper. Line everything along the top edge and sides edges of fabric. (Picture is shown with the top fabric flipped out of the way so you could see I have the zipper open to make sewing easier.)

With a zipper foot (or regular foot but reposition needle as needed) sew across the top through all pieces staying close to the zipper teeth but allow enough space for the zipper pull to move freely. Just before you get to the zipper pull, stop with the needle down and lift the foot and carefully slide the zipper pull past the foot and continue sewing. When finished fold back both pieces and press.

Continue with the other side same as the first.

Fold pieces back and press.

Top stitch across the bottom pieces. I didn't top stitch across the top because it will be attached to my jewelry roll.

Bring the top outside fabric towards you and fold the lining piece on the bottom towards you so that all four pieces are sandwiched on top of each other. Two lining pieces on the bottom and the two outer fabrics on the top.

Now comes the tricky part. Slide the outer fabric up to the top edge of the zipper and do the same with the lining. Pin in place. Make sure the width is the same all across the top edge and press.
** Different fabric in this picture because I forgot to take it when making the purple one.

Sew (or baste to be safe that both top edges are even) down the right side and stopping about an 1" from the bottom. Sew down the left side. (Turn right side out and check that both top edges are even height). If all is ok trim any excess fabric at bottom. Now sew from left edge part way across the bottom. This is where you want to leave an opening to flip fabric to outside. Now fold back out of the way the top outer piece only. Continue sewing from where you stopped all the way across the bottom. (This step is sewing your lining and one piece of outer fabric in place). Now lay flat the outer piece that you had flipped back out of the way and start sewing from where you stopped on the right edge down and part way across the bottom edge. Remember to leave an oppening to flip.

After flipped right side out, hand stitch opening closed.

Position top of pocket on lining slightly to the left of the blue marked line not previously stitched and sew from bottom edge of lining to top side edge of pocket reinforcing both edges.

Take ribbon and fold in half (or fold so that the bottom piece of ribbon is 7" longer), place folded edge along middle left side edge of lining and pin in place. Keep all the ribbon facing the lining and out of the way of the seams.

Lay the 9" x 16-1/2" outside fabric face down on top of the lining. Sew 1/4" around edge leaving an opening to turn inside out. Trim batting close to stitching and trim corners. Flip right side out and slip stitch opening closed.

Recently I received some unwanted spam in my comments. The comments were posted in older posts, I guess the person didn't think I would notice them. Since then I changed my settings to moderate the comments.

I thought I would receive an email notifying me that I had comments to be approved. As of yet I haven't received any such notice. I apologize to those who posted comments several days ago and I just now approved them. Prior to the moderate comments change I always received copies in my email and would be able to read and or respond to them.

From what I understand an email will be sent to me if a non-member comments. I thought I read in the help section an email would be sent either way.

Is there a way to receive comments via email to be approved?

Special Fabric

My dear friend Jessica sent me this beautiful fall fabric with pumpkins and leaves. It sure was a wonderful and thoughtful surprise. Thank you Jessica! Please take a look at her blog. She makes beautiful fish and purses, just to mention a few of the items she sells at her local market. Of course if you want to order something from her I'm sure she would be excited to accommodate you.

I started taking a medical terminology course online. Each lesson should be done within a two week time frame and we are given two lessons each week. One on Wednesday and one on Friday. We are on lesson 8, well actually I am still on lesson 7. I am really enjoying it, but my middle aged brain is a little slow keeping up. I finally made some flash cards to help with memorizing. Didn't have enough so I need to purchase some more to add the remaining words. Each lesson includes several medical website to research. What a wealth of information.

I hope to finally get started on the jewelry rolls a friend requested as gifts for Christmas. I started one but wanted to get her approval before proceeding with the rest. Got the ok, so now full speed ahead. Well, maybe not full speed, next week is pretty busy. Meeting with two cousins on Tuesday, not really sure what we will do. Started a bible lesson in the Spring, but the Summer got busy and now maybe it would be a good time to pick up where we left off. My friend whom I went to school with is visiting from Texas. Now a group of us classmates are getting together on Thursday before she heads back home over the weekend. Saturday, my mother invited me to go to a dinner theatre with some ladies from her church. Couldn't say no to spend the day with mom. Of course Saturday is my school class reunion as well. Thought about going this year, but thought it would be best to go with mom. She hasn't been feeling the greatest lately......

Another Puzzle Piece

As I posted before Judy and I have exchanged puzzle pieces. The first one I made for myself is a do-over, no picture to share, yet to be re-done. It consisted of an underwater type scene but lacked pizzaz, I just wasn't happy at all with it.

Here is my completed second puzzle piece which I am more satisfied with and am happy to share with you. Not so much the first one, which is getting a proper burial never to show its face again. Yes, it was that bad.

Puzzle Pieces for Judy

It's time to share the two puzzle pieces I made for Judy. You can see the two she made for me in a prior post here. She used scraps from an old quilt her Aunt Phyllis gave her to make the blue puzzle. I wondered if she knew blue is my favorite color, though my fabric collection seems to have more other colors than blue.

ETA correction: Judy actually made the puzzle pieces from "scraps," some leftover hand-pieced blocks from a quilt her aunt made.

Card / Notepad Holder

I recently made two card/notepad holders. A friend requested one to give as a gift to DIL. Unfortunately I didn't take a picture of that one but I used purple/pink oriental fabric for the holder and I had a small piece of the cover fabric left over from the journal I made for her which you can see here. I used that fabric for the tie and a third fabric to bind the inside pockets.

This is the second one.

I was fortunate to find some note cards that matched the fabric pretty well. I could also place a notepad in the other pocket.

Surprise from Judy

I received a wonderful package from Judy. You might be able to guess what is hiding under the bow.

Of course on top is a baggie with some goodies, star sequins and a really cute scissor charm (actually looks like a bird).
Then, well, I guess I really need to show you the beautiful puzzle pieces we exchanged. I adore the fabrics Judy chose. Also two lovely fat quarters, matching thread and a cute notepad that reads: FAITH, is the bird that feels the light when the dawn is still dark.

Jesus came to compensate

Searching the Heart

I have been soul searching a lot lately concerning what I could do or perhaps what I didn't do for the Lord. While visiting Lisa's Ivory Blush Roses site I came across a post about "My Heart, Christ's Home" by Robert Boyd Munger. Please visit her blog and read this inspirational writing concerning the rooms in your heart.

My Friend

My friend, I stand in judgment now,
And feel that you are to blame somehow.
On earth I walked with you day by day,

Postcard

I want to thank those who have left notes wondering how I am doing. I am sorry I haven't posted anything for a while. I am still looking for work as well as DH who lost his job. His last day was on February 7. He wouldn't mind the days off if he only new he had a job to return to. That isn't the case as the company moved everything to one of their manufacturing facilities in another state. Everything will work out in God's timing.

Now for the fun stuff. I wanted to share with you a postcard I made for Hideko - Wind from the East. I won one of her crazy quilt pouches and just love it. Please check out her blog for some beautiful work. Now I need to make a few more postcards for some special ladies.

The pattern is from form-a-lines.com. The original use of the pattern is for stitching on paper. I wanted to stitch the design on fabric, so I transferred the pattern to tissue paper, stitched design with metallic thread and then wet the tissue paper to remove. It's a little tricky. I used tweezers to remove the paper and if you get the paper too wet it just pulls apart in little pieces and leaves paper residue. It should just be damp enough to pull out most of the piece in the stitched area. You might want to play with it on scrap to see how it works for you.

The Silver Ring Thing Program - Abstinence

The topic is on Abstinence, it's your choice to read on.

Sunday evening our church youth group attended a "Silver Ring Thing" program. Check it out, there may be one coming to your area.

It is bible based, teaching on abstinence. They had a 40 minute parent/youth leader session at the beginning of the program while the kids attended the 2 1/2 hour program consisting of music, a message, skits, testimonies and a "second chance" message. Of course parents joined the kids after the parent session.
If you choose to make the committment, you have the opportunity to purchase a purity ring, engraved with 1 Thess 4:3-4. They were also given a new testament abstinence study bible with a ring purchase.

This group is reaching youth and adults around the world. Of course they are always running into those who are against the program. They were hoping to have about 800 attend, there were 2,000 in attendence. It appears this generation is willing to listen and give it great thought as to how their life can be affected by the decision they make.

As a parent and you haven't spoken with your teenager, please make the effort to do so. Please also pray for your teenager.

Our kids really need to learn the true facts, whereas in the majority of schools they aren't taught abstinence, they are getting mislead as to what is safe and what is not.

The vision: To create a culture shift in America where abstience becomes the norm again rather than the exception.

Christmas Gift

Here is a pillow I made as a gift for a blogging friend, Judy. We had planned on swapping a crazy quilt square back in the fall. My stress level at that time wasn't co-operating with me to attack a project that I would want to give my all to.

I decided I wanted to make something for her and hoped I could complete this project in time for Christmas. As you can see in the picture the bottom points lacked enough suffing, I took care of that before mailing. What I like about the pillow is that the decorative cover is tied on with ribbon. This way the cover can be changed every season.

I mailed it exactly one week before Christmas. It arrived, but due to the weather conditions there, not in time for Christmas. I am just glad it arrived, oh I would have been so disappointed had it gotten lost in the mail. Actually it came on a day after she spent some time in bed because she wasn't feeling well and she also had fallen and brusied her knee and was feeling a bit stiff as well. So I guess it actually was good timing. :)

Work Test

I am a little late posting about my WorkKeys test. It took one day short of two weeks to get the results. Each day I would check the mail hoping the results would be there waiting for me. I lack patience when waiting on test results of any type, medical or work type. Don't these people know you are sitting on pins and needles waiting to hear something.

I earned the Silver Certificate. I was disappointed considering which category cost me the Gold Certificate. The results of my pre-test were Math - 5 out of 7 levels, Locating Information - 6 out of 6 (perfect score), Reading - 6 out of 7.
These scores would have given me a Gold.

The true test: Math - 6 out of 7 (gained one level), Reading - 7 out of 7 (gained two levels), Locating Information - 4 out of 6. Locating information was my best score in the pre-test and yet cost me the Gold. I could have gotten a 4 in each category and still earned the Silver Certicate. A Gold required 5 or higher in each category.

So now I have something to at least include with my resume, that at my age I still have somewhat of a brain. :)

The job market is just so difficult. I have been thinking about a CNA program, just not sure if that is the route I want to take. I plan on taking a medical terminolgy course at the local vocational school, hoping that will help in the job search. Then perhaps a course in billing and coding.

1. I hate thriller/horror movies.
2. I dislike coffee, only drink tea. Yet I do like coffee ice cream.
3. Love cream cheese mixed with brown sugar and vanilla to dip apples. Taste just like carmel. A favorite snack. Not very healthy though...
4. Love to travel, can get car sick if not in the front seat.
5. Enjoy reading, just finished "Just Enough Light for the Step I'm On" by Stormie Omartian.
6. Rarely watch TV.

SNOW !!!!!!!

First thing this morning I received a call from my brother, he was taking our mother to the doctor. She had a dizzy spell last evening and her blood pressure was sky high.

The doctor said it was more than likely vertigo. Told her to take the pill she normally takes at night so she could get some needed rest today. She called and said she rested for about 30 minutes. She wasn't really sure if she dozed off or not. She had to make 2 pies for tomorrow so the ladies from church could take them to Ronald McDonald house. She said she was feeling better though. Part of her problem is she has anxiety when things like this (vertigo) happens.

The main computer has a "VIRUS" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Something took over the home page. I could use my McAfee scanner, but it disengaged the McAfee siteadvisor. It did find something, but there seems to be more problems than it found. I can't load Spy Bot either. I also can't access anything on the internet that was connected to spyware scanners. Thank heavens I could run the Hijack this log to send to the forum that always helps me out when stuff like this happens. So now I have to work with the forum from the 2nd computer and run back to the other one. It usually takes at least 3 days until they can start to help. So many people with virus issues. Why can't people just get a life instead of making havoc on others.

We woke up yesterday morning to about 4" of snow. This is the backyard, showing the trampoline. The tree is actually in our neighbor's yard. Did I say I "HATE" snow!!!! Better than ice though. We had enough of that last winter.

The lilac trees covered and snow on the birdhouse.

The top portion of the driveway, before the turn, and down the incline. You can see DH's tracks backing up and getting turned around to drive down the driveway. Somtimes I have to park at the bottom because it's just too slippery. Since his truck is 4-wheel drive he can usually make it up.

We had a "L" shaped fence along the bottom edge of the driveway. I had flowers planted there and a metal "Welcome" sign with a flag. This past summer one of the beams needed to be replaced. I told DH that unless he wanted me to slide down the hill and take the fence out with the car he better remove it. He didn't think twice about it.

Last winter when the driveway was icy I started down just inching along and suddenly the car turned sideways and I slid down the hill. I came within inches of hitting the darn fence and going out onto the road. I ended up at least pointed in the right direction. Thankfully we don't have much traffic, but it only takes one.

It's going to be cold for a few days and more snow expected Tuesday/Wednesday.

I took my WorkKeys test on Wednesday at Career Link. They will send me my certificate and my grade in the mail. The test consists of Math, Locating Information and Reading. You are allowed 45 minutes for each category. Each category had between 33 - 36 questions each.

Hope I did well. Time will tell.

Remember back in September, Pat Winter had a birthday give-away and I was one of the winners. I was so excited! I finally made a decision and selected some hand dyed ribbon. Guess what came in the mail! I did take a moment to take a picture of the pretty package before I carefully opened it. It also smelled wonderful too. What a wonderful surprise!

Inside was this pretty silk bag filled with goodies!

She sent some pretty hand dyed ribbons, along with other items I can use in crazy quilting. Two adorable printed on fabric pictures, venice lace that I can dye, as well as a beautiful piece of dark trim with rhinestones and another decorative ribbon. Thank you Pat for your generosity. I love each piece. Take a look at her Etzy shop to see her beautiful handmade and embellished items.

I also received two lace Hummingbirds from another friend Nicki. They are just so adorable! You are so sweet! Thank you!

Tatted Cat

I just wanted to share my tatted cat. The pattern is from Be-stitched.com

The only problem I had was finishing the last row of instructions. I need to check with them to see if the diagram matches the pattern. I made a little adjustment, not sure if I should have or not. LOL

Joining the head to the next to last picot on the required chain is where I ran into the most trouble. It is attached as you can see in the picture, :) but I have a twisted picot. Yes, that's right a twisted picot. Can you see me frowning? I thought I followed the instructions correctly, but I guess I will need to practice, practice, and practice some more on that one. I only ripped it out about 5 times, until I could at least get the last few DS going in the right direction. I know it's still wrong because of the darn twisted picot.

I have made hearts, and connecting the picots were not a problem. This one was different and what a time I had. Why would this be different than when I finished the hearts?????? I am so confused. LOL

It looks like I need to trim the right side whiskers a bit. He or she is a little lopsided.

A Birthday Gift

My friend Rengin recently celebrated her 50th birthday. We share a common history together. As we write I realize how much we are alike when it comes to our interests and our families. Although we have never meet in person, I think people are brought together for a reason.

In celebration of such a special occasion I made this small wallhanging for her. I started it early enough, but then life got in the way, and unfortunately it didn't arrive on time for her birthday, but it did get there. Thank you post office. :)

I was pleasantly surprised as she sent me a package too. I positioned the smaller pieces on a piece of brown fabric I had so you will be able to see the little metal sandal charms, leaves, flowers and so much more. You can click on the picture for a better view. They are just so adorable. Also the lovely ribbons, beads and fabrics. Thank you!

A lovely fat quarter, very pretty thread, a pink ribbon bead and another glass bead with a little star in the center. Thank you!

I won this fob from Sonda at stitchinmedic. She had a give-away in memory of breast cancer victim's or survivor's. It is beautiful, made from pink beads and has a silver ribbon attached at the bottom with the word "HOPE". Yes it is a reminder of how precious life is and we do have hope while enduring the trial. It has been 5-1/2 years since my diagnosis. I thank God for my healing.

My next post will show more surprises....

Hexagon Ornament - Patriotic

I thought I would try a patriotic theme for the hexagon ornament. I like both styles, the hexagon and the triangle. They are equally easy to make. You can see the triangle version in the tutorial I posted earlier today.

If you make these ornaments I would love to see them. I have another idea I would like to try out on them. Maybe I will find some time this weekend to experiment.

Triangle Tree Tutorial's

Below are two tutorials for a triangle tree ornament. The first tutorial was provided by Dorie and the second tutorial below was provided by shescrafty217. Both belong to the HGTV Quilting Needlework message board. Thank you ladies for sharing your instructions.

Here is my version of shescrafty217's tutorial. I am still working on Dorie's version. Will post it soon.

How to make a triangle ornament. Instructions provided by Dorie.

How to make your own hexagon:

1. If you want the radius, like in the template above to be 6-1/4", draw a line 6-1/4" long on a piece of paper. **

2. Mark a dot in the center of line, in this case it would be 3-1/8".

3. Position the point of the compass on the center point of line. Extend leg of compass so the pencil touches the outer point of your line.

4. Now draw a circle.

5. Position point of compass at one end of the 6-1/4" line and draw an intersect line through the circle on the left and right of where your compass is positioned. Do the same on the other end of 6-1/4" line.

6. Now connect the intersect points and you have a hexagon. ***

** Let's say you want each of the 6 sides to be a certain length, such as 4". Then draw an 8" line and mark a dot in the center of line at 4". Each side is always 1/2 the radius. Continue at step 3 above.

*** If you connect every other mark, instead of all six marks, you will end up with an equilateral triangle. Which you can use in the 2nd tutorial to make a triangle tree or click on the link provided in that section for another method.

1. Using the template cut out two contrasting color's of material. The template used measures 6-1/4" across from point to point.

2. Cut a piece of ribbon to desired length to use has a hanger. Position in the middle of one of the sides, keeping it tucked in between the two fabrics or attach it when ornament is completed.

3. Sew the two pieces right sides together with 1/4" seam, leave a small opening to turn fabrics right side out.

4. Turn and press.

5. Lay out the shape with a flat edge at the top.

6. Mark the center point on all sides. Using chalk draw a line from each dot to opposite side creating a center point where all the lines intersect. (sorry not shown)

7. Fold left side in using the center side points as a guide. The folded edge should meet at the interest line in the center of hexagon.

8. Fold back corner as pictured above and pin in place.

9. Now you will go to the corner on the right of the fold you just made. Using the center side points as a guide, fold towards the center and then fold back top corner and pin or go ahead and tack those two down at the bottom where they meet. Fold back bottom corner.

10. Continue folding sides in and turning back the corners.

11. When finished you can add a button or decorate it anyway you like.

1. Cut two 9" equilateral triangles or choose a size you like.

2. Sew right sides together using 1/4" seam allowance, leave opening to flip right sides out. Flip and press.

3. Mark center points on each side. Draw a line down the center of each side with chalk.

4. Fold each side evenly to center and press.

5. Press one side at a time this will give you the center triangle.

6. Start to pull in the folds to meet in the center.

7. Tack each fold down in the center.

8. Begin to fold the little ears to the back where they will meet in the back center. Carefully tack then down.

9. Carefully tack down the back points.

10. Decorate the front as desired.

Chili Recipe and Job Search

What a title. LOL No I am not looking for a cooking job, at least not at the moment. If it comes to that, you do what you have to do to survive. We watched Fun with Dick and Jane Friday night. It was a good movie, but wasn't the best movie to watch considering you are about to lose your job along with 325 others. Had a good ending though. There have been more new plant lay-offs and two more plant closings in the area since DH was notified he would be out of work. I wish I knew what the unemployment rate is for this county. PA might not be so bad as a whole, but the three surrounding counties have been hit hard.

I called Career Link on Friday to find out what their WIN Skills program was all about. It is an assessment tool and you take a math and reading test. I hesitantly signed up for it wondering if it will help or hurt my search for a potential job. I am ok at math, actually liked Algebra in school. Don't ask how many years ago that was. The use of Algebra helps with writing formulas on my Lotus spreadsheet. So I am nervous about what to expect. If I do too bad I wonder if they will allow me do it again.:)

Kathy's Chili

1 pound ground beef or turkey
1 small onion, chopped
1 med large green pepper diced
1 can (28 oz) Del-Monte tomatoes, undrained (Basil/Oregano flavor)
1 can of tomato soup, with bits of tomato
1 can (15-1/2 oz) Mexican chili beans or regular kidney beans and then add chili powder to taste.
1 Can (15-1/2 oz) black beans
1 can (15-1/2 oz) pinto beans

Optional: 1 T grated semisweet baking chocolate ( or a few chocolate chips)

Macaroni
Shredded taco cheese

Cook and stir beef in large nonstick skillet. Then add onion and green pepper and lightly saute. Drain fat.
Add tomatoes, soup, beans, chocolate; mix well. Can thin with beef broth or water if desired.
Bring it to a boil and then cover; reduce heat to simmer for 30 minutes. Stir occasionally.

Cook macaroni in another pan according to directions. I guess you could do it right in the chili but I always usually make to much so I make it in another pan. Drain

When ready to eat, add macaroni to your bowl and top with chili and sprinkle cheese over it.

Wire Tree

Early October our local amusement park had a Covered Bridge Festival. It seems like such a long time ago now. When we arrived the parking lot was filling up fast. I was shocked to see that many cars there. I can't begin to tell you how large the parking lot is, but believe me there are thousands of parking spaces. Needless to say I had to park in the last section, you know out there in nowhere land or at least it seems like that. To conserve our energy for the hours of walking ahead of us checking out all the goodies, we decided to ride the shuttle bus. The kind of bus that is all open, well it had a roof, no cushy cushion on the seat and you can feel the wind through your hair kind of shuttle.

The rides were open that day, so I guess all the parents left their children run through the park while they shopped in peace. LOL There were many vendors showing their arts and crafts. I enjoyed walking through each area and seeing all the beautiful works of art. One booth had adorable shabby chic patchwork quilt wallhanging's with dried lavender bouquet attached and framed in old window frames. It was just adorable. Unfortunately out of my price range and I my spending was limited. I also thought how easy it would be to make one myself. I just wouldn't have the old window frame to use. After walking around for awhile I came upon this wire tree (click on the picture for a better view). I thought how unique it was. It was marked 15.00, I hesitated and thought I would walk around some more to see what else was out there. You know the thought, maybe something better would come along. After about a half hour I returned to the stand with the wire tree. It was still there! The vendor noticed I came back to check it out again, and she pointed out that she had marked it down to 10.00. At this point it was mine. Bless her heart! I am so glad I waited. It was actually decorated for Halloween with pumpkins and this rope/twine with Halloween sayings printed on it. Well it didn't take long for the rope to come off. Let's just say Halloween is my least favorite time of year.

The pumpkins will be fine for Thanksgiving, unless I can think of something else in the mean time. I want to make something to decorate the tree for Christmas. The stand is about 15" and to the top of the wire another 8", so it is about 23" tall. The pumpkins measure 2-1/2" wide and 2" high.

Tatted snowflakes would look cute, or maybe crazy quilted mini hearts and stockings.
If you have any other ideas on small decorations I would love for you to share your ideas.

New Presidential Candidate ???

Pat Winter just posted a link about a new Presidential candidate.

I was thinking on Friday when my husband announced he was losing his job, plant closing, 325 people out work (after several hundred were already left go over the past two years). Who else could we vote into office. Now we know!

So I am off to the local career center to see what jobs are available. I don't think VP is on the list. LOL On a serious note, I would appreciate prayers for guidance on making the right decision.

ETA: Health insurance is one concern.

I would like to bring your attention to one in particular. John Governale has so graciously posted the copyright free images of J. F. Ingalls embroidery stamping pattern catalog from 1886. All the traditional motifs used in crazy quilting embroidery are included in this set of 255 pages.

John also includes a tutorial to clean up scanned images using GIMPshop and Inkscape.

Another Needle Book or Needle Case

Here is the second needle book I made. I thought it needed more around the corners or along the edge and I just couldn't decide what to do. So ta-da it's finished.

The Harrisburg, PA quilt show was last week, Thursday thru Sunday. We arrived at the show with about 10 minutes to spare before the doors opened. I am sad to say my cousin pinched her finger in my car door, so her day didn't start out very well. Since we packed our lunch we could immediately apply ice to her finger. Not a good way to start the day. She had a good time though, meeting up with a friend who lives in the area.

I didn't purchase much. There were tons of fabric and patterns, not much in the way of threads for embroidery or crazy quilting, which is what I really wanted to look for. I did buy a few Valdani balls #12 and a couple DMC #8, a skein of hand dyed thread, a pattern, lace, and some beads. I enjoyed the show and the shopping but prefer the Lancaster Quilt Show for the variety of vendors. The quilts were just gorgeous. I will be adding them to my photo album soon. I tried to remember to photograph the artist information for each one I photographed. While reviewing them I noticed I missed a few. I also didn't get a picture of each one there, but darn close.

Needle Book or Needle Case

I can't believe the summer is coming to an end. Where did the time go. It seems like yesterday that school ended and here we are almost completed 2 weeks already. The weather has been just great the last few weeks. Unfortunately it wasn't our normal hot month of August. The days were warm but the nights cool, which makes for good sleeping but it reminds me too much of fall. I see leaves changing already. It's not that I don't like fall it is winter I dread. I hate the cold, snow and ice. It seems our spring and summers are getting shorter. That means more months on the cool/cold side. Maybe I am just getting older (sigh).....

I finally was able to finish one little project. This is my crazy quilted needle book or needle case. I am also working on another one which will soon be finished.

All I did was cut a front and a back piece and sew them together, embellish as desired. A lining piece and attached 2 pieces of felt (sewn down the middle) and a piece of batting and ribbon to close the book. Layer them, sew around edge, leave opening to turn and turn inside out and stitch opening closed.

Gift from Judy

I was so surprised when I received my mail and found a package from Judy. She sent me these 2 lovely fabrics she purchased at the APNQ and a skein of Wildflowers variegated thread. Thank you so much Judy for your thoughtfulness. I love each piece.
I can officialy say I have now started a collection of variegated threads.

I also want to thank those who posted about the threads they like. I printed all the information and will take it with me everywhere I go. Then if I get lucky and find a store with threads I will be ready to SHOP!

Judy's Heart

Thread and Floss Question

Would you like to share where you like to buy thread or floss for crazy quilt embellishing. What types do you like to work with and why. This can be any type of thread or floss and any size. Just be sure to mention size, ply or any other relevant information. As I mentioned before I am lacking variegated thread. I know there are many variations of variegated as well, closely variegated, by which I mean every few inches vs every foot or more. What about hand dyed or color fastness? So give me your precious thoughts.
